Payroll Surprise Refuels Hawkish Fed Bets

U.S. equities finished the week choppy as an unexpectedly strong August payrolls report cleared the runway for the Federal Reserve to maintain its tight monetary posture. The Department of Labor reported nonfarm payroll gains of 162,000, handily beating consensus expectations of 53,000 to 55,000 and pushing rate hike expectations for the upcoming September FOMC meeting higher. Upward revisions to June and July employment figures further reinforced labor market durability, effectively dampening hopes for an imminent policy pivot. Yields on short-dated Treasuries climbed in response, flattening the 2-year/10-year curve as fixed-income traders priced in a longer runway for restrictive short-term rates. While tech sentiment drew lingering support from resilient semiconductor guidance, broader market participation remained muted amid elevated borrowing costs and lingering geopolitical supply-chain friction across the Strait of Hormuz.

Confidence edged higher from 65% to 70% as a surprisingly strong August nonfarm payrolls report (+162,000) triggered fresh rate hike concerns, offsetting earlier relief and keeping Treasury yields elevated while energy price pressures persisted.

Three conclusions
  1. Hot payrolls data renewed Fed rate-hike fears. August nonfarm payrolls rose by 162,000, nearly triple the Reuters consensus forecast of 56,000. The unemployment rate held at 4.1%, and markets moved back toward roughly 60% odds of a September rate hike.
  2. Yields and energy prices are pressuring broad participation. The 10-year Treasury yield finished around 4.78%, while WTI crude closed at $91.48 after gaining nearly 10% for the week.
  3. Semiconductors provided an important counterweight. Chip shares showed strong relative strength into Friday's broader-market pullback, helping prevent a deeper index-level decline.

Interpretation, not information

Vince's View

U.S. equities finished a choppy trading week under pressure, attempting to digest a hotter-than-expected August nonfarm payrolls report that reignited Federal Reserve rate-hike expectations. While the primary long-term uptrend remains unbroken, the combination of stubborn short-end and long-end Treasury yields, a 9% weekly surge in energy prices driven by supply friction near the Strait of Hormuz, and hawkish central bank expectations heading into the September FOMC meeting demands disciplined, defined-risk execution rather than momentum chasing.

What changed

Treasury yields held near elevated levels throughout the week, with the 10-year yield hovering around 4.78% as fixed-income traders priced in a higher probability of a Fed rate hike following Friday’s unexpected nonfarm payroll gain of 162,000 jobs.

What the market is saying

Institutional capital continues to demand higher risk premiums outside of top-tier technology balance sheets. Broader market components are feeling the pinch of sustained discount rates, leaving index-level stability heavily dependent on mega-cap market concentration.

Where leadership is developing

Semiconductor names and Energy equities provided key relative strength during Friday's session. Energy continues to catch an underlying bid as crude oil posted weekly gains near 9% amid ongoing transit risks in the Strait of Hormuz.

What appears vulnerable

Rate-sensitive cyclical sectors, homebuilders, broad retail, and small-cap value equities remain vulnerable to valuation multiple compression if interest rates stay sticky at upper structural bounds.

What Vince will monitor next

Consumer inflation metrics (CPI/PPI) releases, follow-through in crude oil inventory data, and whether sector participation can broaden beyond semiconductors to support a multi-sector Stage 2 continuation.

VINCE'S BOTTOM LINEThe primary structural bull market remains intact, but sticky long-end yield friction and narrow concentration demand patience and defined-risk execution over chasing extended setups.
03

Trend, participation and cross-asset evidence

Market Regime Dashboard

Trend↑ Neutral / Upper

Rebounded slightly mid-week before Friday's pullback. The S&P 500 closed the week at 7,718.60, managing a modest gain overall as mega-cap tech and semiconductor momentum provided structural support.

Breadth→ Narrow / Mixed

Market breadth remains thin. Leadership is concentrated heavily in mega-cap technology and select energy names, while broad market participation across cyclical sectors and small caps remains constrained.

Momentum→ Neutral short term

Short-term momentum stabilized as strong performance in semiconductor heavyweights countered hawkish interest rate pressure following the August nonfarm payrolls beat.

Volatility→ Elevated

Fixed-income and equity market volatility stayed elevated as bond traders repriced Federal Reserve policy expectations and digested energy supply risks.

Credit / rates↓ Persistent pressure

The 10-year Treasury yield finished Friday around 4.78%, reflecting stronger labor data, persistent inflation concerns and continued pressure from elevated borrowing needs.

Risk appetite→ Selective / Concentration

Capital flows clearly prioritized balance-sheet strength in mega-cap growth and energy, while rate-sensitive areas like homebuilders, broad retail, and real estate saw active rotational selling.

Overall regimeNEUTRAL · 70%

Primary trends remain intact, but stronger labor data, elevated yields and narrow breadth keep the market in a selective rather than broadly risk-on posture.

Prior-week regimeCAUTIOUS · 65%

Confidence improved five points as semiconductor leadership held and the S&P 500 finished the week near prior highs, despite renewed rate pressure.

WHAT STILL WORKS

Mega-cap Tech & Energy

Secular growth leaders with bulletproof balance sheets and energy equities benefiting from crude oil supply premiums continue to draw primary institutional capital.

THE NEW FRICTION

Sticky long-end yields

The 10-year yield holding near 4.78% continues to apply valuation multiple pressure across small-cap equities, rate-sensitive cyclicals, and high-yield credit.

REGIME RISK

Narrow participation

Index-level resilience remains dependent on a relatively small group of technology and energy leaders while rate-sensitive areas continue to lag.

Crude Oil Futures Break Resistance as Geopolitical Risk Escalates. Light Crude Oil futures posted a decisive weekly gain, with WTI settling at $91.48/bbl after rising nearly 10% for the week. The sharp upward repricing reflects a rebuilding of the geopolitical risk premium around the Strait of Hormuz, reinforced by physical-market tightness and a roughly 4.5 million-barrel U.S. crude inventory draw.

CL · Light Crude Oil FuturesWEEKLY · SEP. 4, 4:00 PM ET
Weekly technical chart for Light Crude Oil futures

A multi-year technical inspection of the continuous Light Crude Oil weekly chart reveals a major structural transition underway:

  • Base breakout confirmation: For nearly two years, crude traded inside a broad consolidation range bounded roughly between $68 and $84. The recent impulsive breakout above the $84–$85 resistance zone terminated that sideways Phase 1 structure.
  • Stage 2 continuation & moving-average support: The 40-week moving average has turned upward and is acting as a dynamic structural floor. Former resistance around $83–$85 now becomes the primary support zone to monitor.
  • Target levels & expansion: With the multi-pivot resistance zone cleared, the primary technical target sits around $95–$98, followed by secondary structural resistance near the psychological $100 level.

Strategic Portfolio View

The structural resolution in crude aligns with an overweight posture toward Energy equities. As long as price remains anchored above converted support at $84–$85, energy commodities are positioned to maintain a higher valuation baseline. Higher baseline energy prices create a dual effect: a valuation headwind for rate-sensitive equities while simultaneously offering cross-asset balance against renewed inflation pressure.

VINCE'S COMMENTARY

Avino Silver & Gold Mines Ltd. (ASM) reflects a clean Stage 2 continuation pattern following a multi-year horizontal accumulation base. After completing a major base breakout out of the prolonged yellow consolidation zone, price expanded aggressively toward the $12.00 area before entering a multi-month corrective pullback to absorb overhead supply.

The stock established a higher-low structural base directly above its rising 40-week moving average (orange line), retesting green support in the $6.50–$7.00 zone. Current price action is consolidating constructively below immediate resistance. A decisive breakout above the Trigger level ($7.90) validates the resumption of the primary uptrend. Key technical objectives sit at Target 1 ($9.60–$10.00) at the former intermediate pullback shelf, with secondary expansion room toward Target 2 ($12.00) at the prior cycle peak.

VINCE'S COMMENTARY

Harmony Biosciences Holdings, Inc. (HRMY) exhibits a compelling multi-year base breakout pattern after emerging from a prolonged bottoming formation. Following a corrective cycle that saw price establish a solid baseline floor in late 2023 and early 2024, HRMY reclaimed its 40-week moving average (orange line) and spent several months consolidating above the lower support shelf.

The recent upside impulse pushed price through intermediate resistance, with current price action testing a key structural resistance zone near $40.00–$42.00 (highlighted by the yellow circled region on the right). A decisive breakout above this zone opens a clear path toward the overhead gap window created during the prior major downtrend.

Overhead technical targets sit at Potential Gap Fill ($48.00–$50.00) as primary objective, with long-term structural expansion pointing toward the prior peak near All-Time High ($60.00).

RELY · Reliance Global Group, Inc.WEEKLY · SEP. 4, 4:00 PM ET

VINCE'S COMMENTARY

Reliance Global Group, Inc. (RELY) displays a classic, multi-year horizontal accumulation base structure. After an initial macro decline, the stock established a wide, well-defined trading channel bounded between a strong support floor near $12.50 and upper resistance around the $27.00 region. Throughout this multi-year consolidation, price action has repeatedly tested the rising 40-week moving average (orange line), using it as a structural baseline to absorb overhead supply.

Current price action is pressing directly against the top of the multi-year rectangle. A decisive weekly breakout above the Trigger level ($27.30) confirms a Stage 2 breakout from this multi-year accumulation base, unlocking upside expansion potential. Overhead technical objectives sit at Target #1 ($31.00), followed by Target #2 ($37.00), with secondary long-term Fibonacci projection room extending up to Target #3 ($51.00).

VINCE'S COMMENTARY

China Automotive Systems, Inc. (CAAS) has resolved a multi-year consolidation range, clearing major overhead horizontal resistance with a strong volume expansion bar. Following a multi-year bottoming process, the stock reclaimed its rising 40-week moving average (orange line) and established a solid support base above the $3.80–$4.20 zone before making its upward push.

The recent breakout bar decisively cleared the key multi-pivot resistance band near $5.00, confirming a primary Stage 2 trend continuation sequence out of the long horizontal accumulation phase.

Overhead technical objectives sit at Target #1 ($6.80–$7.00) at the initial prior cycle peak shelf, with secondary expansion potential extending up to Target #2 ($8.20–$8.50) near long-term multi-year highs.

VINCE'S COMMENTARY

U.S. Bancorp (USB) reflects a highly disciplined Stage 2 continuation structure. Following a major multi-year base breakout above its yellow accumulation range, USB established a sustained uptrend characterized by well-defined higher highs and higher lows while riding its ascending 40-week moving average (orange line).

After consolidating beneath horizontal resistance around the $60.00 level (green support/resistance shelf), price staged an upside expansion and is currently retesting this breakout level from above (highlighted by the yellow circle). This successful pullback-and-retest sequence confirms strong institutional support at former resistance.

Technical expansion targets stand defined at Target #1 ($68.00) at the immediate Fibonacci extension level, followed by Target #2 ($78.00), with secondary long-term projection potential extending up toward Target #3 ($104.00).

VINCE'S COMMENTARY

CVS Health Corporation (CVS) reflects a clean breakout-and-retest structure following a major multi-year recovery out of its late-2024 macro bottom. After reclaiming its rising 40-week moving average (orange line), CVS engineered a sustained Stage 2 advance, eventually surging through long-term horizontal resistance near the $92.00–$94.00 zone (green band).

Following a peak toward multi-year highs near $110.00, price underwent a controlled pullback to retest the former multi-year resistance shelf as new structural support (highlighted by the yellow circle). This successful retest and stabilization directly above the green support zone confirm institutional absorption and establish a constructive foundation for primary trend continuation.

Key technical targets stand defined with an Initial Target ($110.00) at the prior cycle high peak, with secondary expansion room opening toward higher overhead Fibonacci projection zones upon a successful breakout.

VINCE'S COMMENTARY

Petróleo Brasileiro S.A. (PBR) exhibits a clean Stage 2 continuation pattern, benefiting from the broader tailwind across international energy equities. After emerging from its long-term accumulation base above the yellow support zone, PBR established a well-defined primary uptrend supported by its rising 40-week moving average (orange line).

Following an initial impulse run toward its peak near $21.50, price underwent a sharp corrective pullback to execute a Clean Retest of former multi-year horizontal resistance near the $15.00 green support band. Institutional buyers stepped in forcefully at this level, forming a constructive handle (highlighted by the yellow circle).

A renewed expansion bar is currently challenging the multi-year peak. A decisive breakout above All-Time High ($21.50) opens blue-sky territory with no overhead resistance beyond this point, reinforcing long-term expansion potential.

VINCE'S COMMENTARY

iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ) displays a clean Stage 2 breakout-and-retest structure, reflecting sustained relative strength across Latin American equity markets. After breaking out from its long multi-year accumulation base above the yellow support shelf, EWZ initiated an aggressive Stage 2 uptrend supported by its rising 40-week moving average (orange line).

Following a peak near $42.00, price underwent a controlled multi-month pullback to test its intermediate horizontal support zone near $33.00 (green line). Buyers stepped in aggressively at this level, forming a higher-low consolidation handle directly above the rising 40-week average.

The recent weekly bar (highlighted by the yellow circle) demonstrates a strong push back through the intermediate volume cluster near $34.00–$36.00, confirming a Fund Base re-engagement. This recovery sets up a primary trend continuation toward the Initial Target ($42.00) at the prior cycle high, with secondary expansion potential extending into higher structural resistance levels upon a successful breakout.

VINCE'S COMMENTARY

lululemon athletica inc. (LULU) demonstrates a severe Stage 4 breakdown, accelerating sharply to the downside following its Q2 earnings release. On both the weekly and monthly timeframes, LULU exhibits a textbook, multi-year topping structure marked by a prolonged sequence of lower highs and lower lows beneath a declining 40-week (and multi-month) moving average.

Weekly Breakdown & Volume Spike: The weekly chart highlights a decisive breakdown below horizontal support near $110.00–$115.00, accompanied by an exceptional surge in relative volume (highlighted by the yellow circle). This volume expansion confirms heavy institutional distribution following Q2 revenue misses ($2.42B vs. $2.46B consensus) and a sharp cut to full-year guidance. While headline EPS reported at $2.92, $0.86 of that was driven by one-off tariff refunds, masking underlying weakness in North American comparable sales (-12%).

Monthly Macro View: The monthly timeframe puts this breakdown into multi-year perspective. As annotated on the monthly chart, price still has room to drop to the $75 level before finding any real support at the multi-year horizontal accumulation base established between 2011 and 2018.

Technical Outlook: LULU remains locked in a firm Stage 4 markdown phase with no technical evidence of accumulation or base formation. Until price can stabilize and build a constructive multi-month base above major historical support near $75.00, the path of least resistance remains skewed heavily to the downside.

VINCE'S COMMENTARY

NIKE, Inc. (NKE) shows a structural Stage 4 breakdown across both weekly and monthly timeframes, extending a multi-year downtrend characterized by lower highs, lower lows, and persistent overhead pressure beneath a declining 40-week moving average (orange line).

Weekly Breakdown Below Key Baseline: On the weekly chart, NKE spent months consolidating above its major horizontal support zone near $40.00–$45.00 (yellow shaded region). The latest weekly price bar (highlighted by the yellow circle) marks a decisive breakdown below this support baseline, confirming a breakdown from the consolidation handle and signaling renewed institutional distribution.

Monthly Macro View: The long-term monthly timeframe provides macro context for the current decline. Having surrendered intermediate support levels near the $50.00–$60.00 green band, NKE has broken through multi-year structural support. As annotated on the monthly chart, the next area of strong support is in the $18 level—reflecting the primary multi-year accumulation base established between 2010 and 2012 (yellow band).

Technical Outlook: NKE remains firmly locked in a Stage 4 markdown phase with no structural evidence of accumulation. Until price can stabilize and establish a confirmed bottoming pattern above historical support near $18.00, the technical path of least resistance points toward continued downside expansion.

TK · TEEKAY CORPORATION · NYSE

A fortress balance sheet renting peak tanker rates — owned at a premium

Teekay is primarily a holding vehicle whose value is a controlling economic stake of roughly 30% in Teekay Tankers plus parent cash. The durable attraction is the balance sheet; the central risk is that current earnings are being generated at exceptionally strong crude-tanker spot rates.

Price~$13.63
Market cap~$1.18B
TNK stake~$990M
StanceNeutral

The one thing to understand first: you are buying a tanker-rate bet through a holding company. TK's assets are primarily roughly 10.6 million Teekay Tankers shares — around a 30% economic stake, with control through supervoting shares — plus a modest amount of parent cash. The operating fleet and related service businesses sit inside Teekay Tankers.

Business quality & cycle exposure

Teekay itself is principally a holding company. Teekay Tankers owns a mid-sized crude and product tanker fleet and trades nearly all of it in the spot market, making revenue highly sensitive to day-to-day freight rates. That exposure has been exceptionally favorable in 2026: Teekay Tankers reported a record Q2 adjusted profit of approximately $193.6 million, with Suezmax spot rates around $109,200/day. About 44% of Q3 Suezmax days were booked near $104,800/day at the time of the Q2 update.

The competitive advantage is not pricing power. Tanker shipping is a commodity-freight business. Teekay's strengths are operating discipline, a modern fleet, an unusually strong balance sheet and the ability to invest or return capital without depending on leverage.

Financial statement forensics

The earnings are cash-backed, but they are highly cyclical. Teekay Tankers' Q2 adjusted net income of roughly $193.6 million came alongside very strong free cash flow. GAAP earnings have also been helped by gains on vessel sales, so adjusted results and spot-rate economics are more informative than the headline GAAP line alone.

The balance sheet is the durable part of the thesis. Consolidated TK reported roughly $1.27 billion of cash and short-term investments against only about $37 million of debt, while Teekay Parent itself held approximately $56 million of cash after the June special dividend.

Key metricCurrent readWhy it matters
TK price / market cap~$13.63 / ~$1.18BShares are near the top of their 52-week range.
TNK stake~10.6M shares / ~$990MThe underlying Teekay Tankers stake is the dominant asset.
Q2 TNK adjusted net income~$193.6MRecord profitability reflects exceptional tanker spot rates.
Q2 Suezmax spot rate~$109,200/dayThe central driver of current earnings power.
Q3 Suezmax booked~$104,800/day on 44% of daysSuggests another strong quarter, though slightly below Q2's peak.
Look-through NAV~$1.05BTK trades at a modest premium rather than a normal holdco discount.

Capital allocation

Capital allocation has been disciplined. Teekay Tankers sold two older vessels for about $138 million and committed roughly $190 million to two new Suezmax vessels for 2027 delivery. TK has also returned meaningful capital through special dividends. The key caveat is that these distributions are variable and should not be capitalized as a steady yield.

Valuation

TK screens cheaply on trailing earnings, but that is the classic commodity-cycle trap: the earnings denominator is being struck at unusually high tanker rates. The cleaner holding-company lens is sum-of-the-parts. At the research-date prices, the TNK stake plus parent cash was roughly $1.05 billion versus a TK market capitalization near $1.18 billion, implying a modest premium to look-through NAV.

That means the market is already assigning value to continued tanker-rate strength, control of TNK and the prospect of future capital returns. The stock is therefore less a cheap re-rating story than a bet that freight rates remain elevated.

Bull case

  • Tanker rates remain elevated as geopolitical and routing disruptions keep ton-miles high.
  • Teekay Tankers' cash balance supports continued special dividends and disciplined fleet renewal.
  • A rising TNK share price expands TK's look-through NAV and validates today's premium.

Bear case

  • Normalization in Hormuz or Red Sea transit drives spot rates back toward mid-cycle levels and compresses earnings rapidly.
  • The holdco premium unwinds at the same time the underlying TNK share price falls.
  • Cash remains trapped at the controlled subsidiary or is deployed less favorably than shareholders expect.
VINCE'S COMMENTARY

Technical structure

TK displays a high-conviction Stage 2 breakout structure across weekly and monthly timeframes. The long-term chart shows a major structural transition after a multi-year base, while the weekly chart shows a tight consolidation near multi-year highs above a rising 40-week moving average. Vince's primary technical objectives are $15.90, $19.00 and $28.00, with the $11–$12 area serving as an important structural support shelf.

Research verification: Teekay and Teekay Tankers operating results, booked rates, vessel transactions and balance-sheet figures were checked against company disclosures. The valuation and look-through NAV analysis reflects the research-date market prices and is inherently sensitive to changes in TNK's share price and tanker rates.
